Our work

These are some of the open access journals we have facilitated:

Editor: Philip Hayward (University of Technology, Australia)

Cultural Studies Q1: History Q1 (Scimago 2020)

https://shimajournal.org/

Shima addresses social, cultural, environmental and conceptual aspects of various types of island, peninsular and otherwise insular coastal and shoreline communities, their relationship to the oceanic, estuarine, deltaic, riverine and/or lacustrine environments that substantially define them and the manner in which various types of engineered waterways and bodies of water constitute cultural landscapes in terrestrial locations.

Our role

Shima started in 2007 as an independent open access journal. Since its inception, Plate Media has worked closely with the editor to build the journal's online profile and keep up to date with evolving metrics and indexing requirements. Over the years it has grown to become a renowned Q1 publication (Cultural Studies, History), has organised numerous international conferences and symposia, and has published several special issues and anthologies.

Editors-in-Chief: Sun-Kee Hong, Mokpo National University, Korea; Gloria Pungetti, University of Cambridge, UK and University of Sassari, Italy

Anthropology Q2: Cultural Studies Q2 (Scimago 2020)

The Journal of Marine and Island Cultures (JMIC) publishes peer-reviewed, original research papers, reviews, reports, and comments covering all aspects of the humanities and cultural issues pertaining to the marine and island environment. In addition the journal publishes articles that present integrative research conducted across interdisciplinary boundaries, including studies examining the sustainability of the living environment, nature-ecological resources and the socio-economic systems of islands and islanders.

Our role

Previously hosted and distributed by Elsevier, Plate Media assisted JMIC's transition to an independent and open access journal published by the Institute for Marine and Island Cultures, Mokpo National University. As well as creating the journal's online portal, we assist JMIC with publishing articles in both HTML and PDF format, including layout and proofing.

Editor-in-Chief: Adam Grydehøj (University of the Faroe Islands, Denmark)

Geography, Planning, and Development Q1: Political Science and International Relations Q1: Sociology and Political Science Q1 (Scimago 2020)

Island Studies Journal (ISJ) is a peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of islands, archipelagos, and the waters that surround and connect them. ISJ encourages cross-disciplinarity for the sake of providing more comprehensive and holistic assessments of the conditions and issues impacting on islands and island life. All articles published in ISJ are rigorously peer-reviewed.

Our role

Originally managed by the University of Prince Edward Island, Canada, Plate Media helped ISJ establish an independent home for their future, with donation facilities. We set up a minimal, clean, and user-friendly content management system so that ISJ could run without requiring an institutional support team for software upgrades and other technical aspects. ISJ is now administered and published as a self-sufficient journal, by the journal's editorial board.

https://localejournal.org/

Locale: The Pacific Journal of Regional Food Studies is an open-access online journal. It combines peer-reviewed academic articles with industry forums, debates and photo essays. Locale’s emphasis is on the Pacific (i.e. Australia, New Zealand, the islands of the Pacific, and the Pacific Rim) and on issues or processes at the local or regional level.

Our role

Launched in 2012, Plate Media helped set up Locale as a streamlined and independent open access journal. As a cross-institional journal published by Southern Cross University's Regional Food Network initiative, we assist with PDF publication, layout, copyediting, and proofing.
